The Bali Major 2023: Anticipating the Playoff Contenders

The group stage of the season's final major has concluded, determining the six teams that have been eliminated from the tournament, occupying the lowest positions in each group's overall standings. Only the top 12 teams from their respective regions have advanced to the playoffs. In this article, we will discuss the teams playing in tomorrow's matches and their chances of success.

Unexpected surprises emerged during the group stage. Prior to the start of The Bali Major 2023, Quest Esports, a team that recently entered the first division of the DPC, was considered the "dark horse" of the tournament. However, they surpassed expectations by claiming the top spot in their group. PSG.LGD was the only team to defeat Quest Esports, while other formidable opponents either drew with JordanATF or lost two consecutive maps.

The substitution of TRWuiter with JordanATF before the summer DPC league proved beneficial for the team. With an active and aggressive trio supporting their carry player, KZTA2000 (also known as KZNaive-) from Kazakhstan, JordanATF became the focus of attention for opponents throughout the mid-game. JordanATF's playstyle differs from the typical offlaner approach, often opting for an aggressive core build even on heroes like Underlord or Timbersaw. Their opponents may not have anticipated such early aggression.

While Quest Esports showcased their best heroes and executed their innovative ideas during the group stage, it remains to be seen if they have more strategies up their sleeve for the playoffs. Their final match of the day against Team Aster will reveal their true potential.

There has been a change of leaders in South America. Evil Geniuses, previously dominant in the region, faced a series of misfortunes since the ESL Berlin Major 2023. The trend continued in The Bali Major 2023, as Evil Geniuses failed to reach the lower bracket of the playoffs, leaving beastcoast as the sole representative from South America. After parting ways with K1, beastcoast welcomed a new carry player, David "Parker" Njohote, who injected new confidence and motivation into the team. Parker surprised everyone during the group stage with his signature heroes, Templar Assassin and Shadow Fiend, securing beastcoast's spot in the upper bracket of the playoffs. Their match against Team Spirit was particularly memorable, as Parker made an impressive comeback after a disastrous start. The honor of South America now rests on the shoulders of beastcoast, who aim to step out of Evil Geniuses shadow.

All Eastern European teams have successfully advanced to the playoffs, representing the region with varying degrees of success. BetBoom Team will start the second stage of the tournament in the upper bracket. Despite using the fewest number of heroes compared to their opponents in the group stage, their performance remained unaffected. The key to their success lies in sticking to their established strategy. However, the statistics indicate that their best hero, Terrorblade, may not find a place in the draft of The Bali Major 2023, suggesting we may not see him during the playoffs. Nevertheless, BetBoom Team has other "meta" heroes at their disposal, including Morphling, Medusa, Bloodseeker, and even carry heroes like Broodmother. It might be time to introduce Naga Siren as well.

Securing a position higher than 8th place is crucial for BetBoom Team, as they have not received an invitation to The International yet. They are only 300 DPC points away from qualifying, but Valve's calculation methods can be unpredictable.

In the lower bracket of the playoffs, Team Spirit and 9 Pandas have a tough road ahead. Their first opponents will not be easy: Team Aster or Quest Esports for 9 Pandas, and Team Liquid or PSG.LGD for Team Spirit. However, these teams have already secured their spots in the main tournament of the year. They aim to earn more DPC points to solidify their results in case Valve's point calculation falls short once again.

Moving on to Europe, Team Liquid and Tundra Esports had a disappointing performance during the ESL DreamLeague Season 20. Fans were eager to see if their poor showing was just a fluke, and it seems that it was. Team Liquid confidently took the lead in their group, with Nisha experimenting with heroes like Invoker and Lone Druid. They have regained their previous form and are now among the tournament favorites. However, we can't overlook the potential of the Gaming Gladiators, who had a slow start but finished third in Group B.

Tundra Esports, on the other hand, is facing challenges as they compete with substitutes. Due to illness, Saksa had to leave the major, and their coach, CAAui_2000, stepped in as a replacement. This change not only resulted in a player substitution but also required position swaps between supports. Despite these obstacles, Tundra Esports has been holding up well. The question remains whether they can defeat BetBoom Team.

Moving to the Chinese teams, PSG.LGD performed exceptionally well in the group stage, matching the champions of previous Majors and deciphering the tactics of Quest Esports. It's difficult to predict the outcome of their first playoff match against Team Liquid. While PSG.LGD may not be fully prepared for such opponents, they have a chance to make it to the top three of the tournament through the lower bracket.

Team Aster, on the other hand, appears weaker. They showcased their skills in the group stage but had communication issues in the previous DreamLeague. However, their third-place finish in the group and advancement to the upper bracket deserve recognition.

Finally, Azure Ray made it to the playoffs through tiebreakers. Their journey seems to have relied on luck rather than the ambitious claims they made when forming the roster. It appears that these "veterans" of the Chinese professional scene are simply playing for fun.
